Justice for Karabo: Sandile Mantsoe Found Guilty of Murder
A huge sense of relief enveloped the Mokoena family after their daughter’s killer was found guilty by the High court today. Sandile Mantsoe was found guilty of murdering Karabo Mokoena at the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg. Reports show that acting Judge Peet Johnson also found Mantsoe guilty of defeating the ends of justice and of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Several reports including a statement which was read aloud in court showed that Mantsoe also claimed Mokoena used to beat him up and that she became angry and depressed after she was raped by the friend of a former partner. He also alleged that Mokoena used to self-harm and that her sister had witnessed this. “I tried to be a positive influence in her life. But it was unfortunate that I came to her life when things were already bad,” said Mantsoe just after the judgement was passed. However, Johhnson has accused Mantsoe of trying to paint Mokoena as suicidal in order to drive his narrative that she had taken her own life.
Mantsoe stabbed Karabo and tried to hide the wounds by burning her body and dumping it in a veld in Lyndhurst. In a video clip posted on Twitter by journalist – – Mantsoe claimed that “maybe I was guilty of building a person [Karabo] and being the last one there when she collapsed.”
